Music for Generation Z is all about the internet and finding a place where they belonged through digital communities. Unlike older generations who used the radio or MTV, Gen Z discovers music through short videos on apps like TikTok, where a 15-second "hook" can make a song a global hit overnight. This has allowed artists like Benson Boone, Tate McRae, and PinkPantheress to go from recording in their bedrooms to headlining arenas in just a couple of years. They generally care less about full albums and more about playlists that match a specific "vibe" or emotion, leading to the rise of stars like Conan Gray and Billie Eilish who speak openly about mental health. Because they use streaming services, they ignore traditional genre boundaries, easily mixing styles like the "hyperpop" of Charli XCX or the indie-pop of Sabrina Carpenter with global sounds like K-Pop or Latin pop. While they are a very digital generation, they also love the "aesthetic" of physical items, leading to a big comeback for vinyl records and cassettes as collectibles. This "hook-first" era is defined by catchy melodies and viral trends that make music feel like a direct extension of their personal lives.
